In Sudan an old woman, who has nothing to eat and no money at all, picked her way along a muddy, trash-strewn path. She stopped at a pile of garbage carefully removed the remains of a dirty onion and sat down, slowly eating the onion for breakfast.
In Southern Sudan hospitals are filled with infants and children who are ill with malaria, malnutrition or a viral disease. Around the hospital grounds patients, of all ages, were urinating and defecating. Only water was available at a common outside pump and not at the ward. Babbies with diarrhea, flies buzz around, and doctors have not been paid for six months.
