In July 2010, South Africa was introduced to a H.I.V prevention gel. Those who used the gel most regularly cut their odds of infection by 54 percent. The gel has only been made for woman and with more research; a gel for men can be created. Studies in South Africa have shown estimates of 5.7 million people are infected, which is more than any other nation. Only about $58 million of the $100 million that was donated for this cause was used for this research. Researchers would like to use the rest of the money to create an even stronger gel but for now they have to close the funding gap and get the gel to women. Donors have not committed enough money for even one of the two studies needed to confirm a promising South African trial of the gel. I think it’s amazing that we have the technology to create substances like this. Also, once this is introduced in America, I’m sure it will make a huge impact on many people.
