Fields of Italy
VIVARO, Italy — Giorgio Fidenato declared war on the Italian government and environmental groups. In April with a news conference and a YouTube video, which showed him poking six genetically modified corn seeds into Italian soil.
Mr. Fidenato, 49, an agronomist, he planted two fields of genetically modified corn.
The seeds known as MON810, are modified. So that the corn produces a chemical that kills the larvae of the corn borer, a devastating pest. European Union rules allow this particular seed to be planted.

Gunman and 8 hostages killed
According to the New York Times, an ex-cop known as Rolando Mendoza hijacked a tourist bus that was from Hong Kong. After hearing about the incident, local Police Commandos rush to the scene, stopped the bus, and had a standoff for 12 hours. Rolando put up signs on the windows saying his demands. His main demand was to get his job back. After awhile, he asks police to send in an interview team but Police wouldn’t let civilians near the bus.
Commandos try and break the glass windows using a sludge hammer but then gunshots break loose. One man in the bus was shot in the leg while two others were left dead. A radio broadcast gets a hold of Rolando and he tells them that he has shot two and will kill more if they don’t stop. He later kills six more to show he is even more serious but then the bus driver jumps out the window and says that everyone is dead. Commandos have proceeded in with tear gas and kill the man. President of the Philippines was accused for his Commandos not handling the situation more carefully by the President of China.
Argentina Faulted for Reproductive Policies
The Government of Argentina's president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, refused to steps toward protecting women's health। Socal wave sweeping through Argentina, including Congress's approval last month of a national law authorizing same-sex marriages. Women struggle to obtain birth control. The doctors shy away from offering legal abortions in the predominantly Roman Catholic country. In 2008, more than 20 percent of deaths are caused from unsafe abortions. They estimated 40 percent of pregnancies in 2005 ended in abortions, most of them illegal & unsafe.

Argentina’s Belief’s
Every August, many people in Argentina pay tribute to their earth goddess, Pachamama.
People make very good food such as tamales, stews, llamas, and lambs and so much more.
They bury these things in their backyard along with cigars, liquor, and coco leaves.
They believe if they do this good fortune will come to them and abundant harvest.
It is a very known tradition in Argentina to do that.

"I put it on just before I was due to go out on parade, but I felt these sharp pains when something stuck into my back," she told Sydney's Daily Telegraph. "I took the top off and saw all these pins had been stuck in it."
There were 82 other contestants so there is no way to narrow it down, but she does say that the girls from the South American countries and Philipines were 'extremely competitive'.
She has no plans to further her career in modeling or even to compete in another beauty pagent.

5 Guards Killed in Tajikistan Prison Break
On August 23, 2010 two dozen prisoners at a Tajikistan prison escaped killing five guards in the process. The twenty five prisoners to escape were militants of Russia’s North Cacuasus region and members of the Islamic movement of Uzbekistan, which has links to the Taliban groups of Afganistan. Many of these people were imprisoned for attempting to overthrow the government. The prisoners escaped by overpowering the guards late Sunday night. They were said to have taken advantage of one of the guards “negligence” and seized one part of the detention facility. During the escape the prisoners initially killed a 31 year old man, and severely beat another man. Then they changed into camofluaged uniforms and fled the prison with stolen weapons. A few hours later the escapees attacked another detention facility killing four more guards. A special team of law enforcement officials have been sent out to find the prisoners.
I think the prison that the prisoners escaped from should have better security. Twenty five prisoners should not have been able to flee the prison.

Art Theft Underworld Frustrates France
There has been a series of art thefts in Europe over the past year. Over 20 highly priced paintings by famous artists including Pablo Picasso have been stolen. The biggest of these crimes took place last may when two art pieces were stolen from a granddaughter of Pablo Picasso. The two works were worth a combined total of $227 million dollars. 5 pieces were also stolen from the Paris Museum of Modern Art by making a molded copy of a security key and entering through the only window in the whole museum that wasn’t covered by a camera. The country is baffled by these thieves and the thefts have aroused many questions, such as: Where are they selling these recocgnizable paintings? And When will it stop? These recent events have definately galvanized museums into improving their security systems and many French museums are rethinking their security strategies. I think that Pablo Picasso's granddaughter should hire some bodyguards, or maybe think about putting an alarm in her apartment...

H.I.V Gel
In July 2010, South Africa was introduced to a H.I.V prevention gel. Those who used the gel most regularly cut their odds of infection by 54 percent. The gel has only been made for woman and with more research; a gel for men can be created. Studies in South Africa have shown estimates of 5.7 million people are infected, which is more than any other nation. Only about $58 million of the $100 million that was donated for this cause was used for this research. Researchers would like to use the rest of the money to create an even stronger gel but for now they have to close the funding gap and get the gel to women. Donors have not committed enough money for even one of the two studies needed to confirm a promising South African trial of the gel. I think it’s amazing that we have the technology to create substances like this. Also, once this is introduced in America, I’m sure it will make a huge impact on many people.

On Thursday the court convicted a musician of causing bodily-harm to her ex-boyfriend by having unprotected sex with him even though she knew she was infected with H.I.V. which causes AIDS. Nadja Benaissa is 28 and a singer, she performed with the band No Angels. She avoided prison by receiving a two year suspended sentence for showing deep remorse through out the trial in Darmstadt. Her ex-boyfriend informed them that she infected him during a brief relationship in 2004. In 1988 a german court made it a crime for a person to have sex with a partner while aware of having these conditions. If you do, you could face up to ten years in prison and courts in Germany have handed out lengthy terms.
Cleaner Energy in Europe
About five years ago, about seventeen percent of Portugal's energy was from renewable resources. By the end of twenty-ten, they plan on using forty-five percent clean energy. With these plans, energy prices have gone up fifteen percent in five years due to the renewable energy program.
The oil spill in the Gulf has reminded politicians and citizens alike about the need for clean energy. Europe has been leading the way for cleaner resources, Portugal number eighteen on some lists, with the U.S. lagging behind. Obama has been planning on catching up, but politics always get in the way, it seems.
Cleaner energy in Europe will set the trend for renewable resources in the rest of the world. In fact, Korea is making an energy-efficient island, easily following suit. Europe and parts of Asia have entered the future, why don’t we, the U.S.?

Philippine Crisis
On August 23, 2010, a bus full of Hong Kong tourists was held in hostage by a 55 year old former policeman, Rolando Mendoza in Manila Philippines. In the bus there were 22 Hong Kong tourists, along with 3 Filipinos – a driver, a guide, and a photographer. During the hostage, Rolando freed 9 tourists from the bus and the driver was able to escape safely through a window. Resulting from the hostage, 8 Hong Kong tourists died and 7 were wounded. The hostage lasted for 12 hours but Rolando fired his gun only during the end of the crisis when he saw his brother being taken by the police on the news from a monitor inside the bus. The major mistakes that the Philippine police did was letting the crisis show on media when it was happening and the ground commander failed to take control of the situation and his team. In my opinion, the police department of the Philippines was not able to do their job and did not handle the hostage as safely as they could have. Because of the carelessness, I think that the death of some Hong Kong tourists were committed by the police.

Death toll in Bejing
On Aug 24, 2010, A Chinese passenger jet crashed, killing 42 people, in the nation’s first fatal crash in 5 years. It crashed an hour after departing from Harbin, China. The other 54 survivors were severely injured. 2 people on the ground were also killed. Among the passengers were 5 children, they all survived the crash, but 4 of them suffered heavy respiratory tract burns. The plane crashed around 9:30 p.m. local time. The plane broke in half throwing some passengers out of the cabins before bursting in flames. They said passengers were unable to open emergency exits after the wreck; survivors escaped through cracks in the fuselage. Xinhua news reported that Chinese carriers had previously complained of problems with the aircraft, including cracks in the turbine plates and flight control system errors. In my opinion, the airline was being pretty dumb not getting the plane checked even though there were alot of complaints.

Tottenham is on the Move
According to the New York Times, Tottenham Hotspurs are on the move. For the upcoming European Champions League, there will be 32 clubs from 18 countries participating. Inter Milan won the championship last year and collected around 62 million dollars while Manchester United, who lost in the quarterfinals, were in second in the financial rewards. Even though Tottenham finished 4th in the English Premier League, they came back from a 3 goal difference in a two match playoff and won it 6-3. They defeated the Swiss Club, Young Boys of Berne which left the fans dancing in the rain. The man leading the Spurs is a 6 foot 7 man named Peter Crouch. He had 2 goals that he headed in with a penalty shot when Gareth Bale was fouled. They then played at the Swiss field which they had an advantage with the slippery turf. Crouch went through 10 career moves till he finally came back to Tottenham for 15 million dollars. Crouch wants to play the best clubs to see how good Tottenham is and we will see how well they do.

PLANE CRASH KILLED PEOPLES!!! COMMENT
According to the New York Times 42 people were killed in a terrible plane crash in bejing. 54 were also injured on this terrible Tuesday night. The thought reason for this was that the runway was very foggy and the jet could not land resulting in a crash. Immediately after crashing the jet burst into flames killing many instantly though some died slow and painfully. Enginears are still looking for another cause. Survivors suggest that the plain stayed together until hitting a grassy plane where it burst into flames. The airport swears it was a complete accident and will not happen again.

Shakenhurst Manor
According to the New York Times, in Cleobury Mortimer, England, something happened that has not happened in over a thousand years. For over a thousand years the Shakenhurst Manor has been in the same family. It is now for the first time in a millennium, going back on the market. The entire property, the main house, the 12 cottages, 1,300 acres, or 525 hectares, of woods and farmland, a lake and river with fishing rights and the shooting rights are for sale at £12 million, or about $19 million. The real estate agent believes that people will pay premium price for the whole property, and thinks it to be a shame to break it up. I think that it’s very interesting that a house that has been in royal family for a thousand years is going on the market. I really hope that the real estate agent doesn’t break up the property, and the new owner preserves its rich history.

Coordinated Attacks Strike 13 Iraqi Cities
BAGHDAD
Insurgents unleashed more the a dozen coordinated attacks across Iraq on wednesday in a way to show that there able to strike at will, offering their counterpoint to American of bringing the war in Iraq “to a responsible end.”
In attacks in 13 towns and cities, hit-and-run shootings, roadside mines and more than a dozen IED’s. The toll was in the dozens, but the symbolism underscored a theme of America’s experience here its deadlines, including the Augest 31 date to end combat operations, have rarely reflected the reality on the ground and have often been accompanied by a wave of insurgent attacks. “The message the insurgents want to deliver to the Iraqi people and the politicians is that we exist, and we choose the time and place,” said a judge and former lawmaker. “They are carrying out such attacks when the Americans are still here, so just imagine what they can do after the Americans leave.”

Venezuela reports 4 times more casualties than IRAQ!
On August 22 it was concluded that 4,644 civilians had died due to violence in Iraq. However in the Venezuela, whose population is about equal to Iraq’s, 16,000 casualties were reported due to the same causes. Venezuelans have been leaving their homes and even families behind to avoid becoming a victim. In the local newspaper of Venezuela there was a picture posted of a dozen bodies lying on the ground. The court ordered the local news to stop printing and distributing the paper. Apparently, these killings have been occurring because of the gap between the rich and the poor. According to Scholars of Venezuela, the amount of homicides was 3 times as much last year than when Mr. Chavez, their current governor, was elected. Since police officer’s salaries remain low in Venezuela, the officers themselves commit crimes like robbery and kidnapping. According to the court more killings have been occouring because "the country is flooded with thousands of firearms." I believe these casualties have been occuring because the poor people are trying to gain the rich people benefits, while the rich people instead of fending off the poor, continue to take action.
Current Event
Last Wednesday an Afghan soldier in training shot and killed two Spanish police officers and an interpreter. The Spanish run training camp in Kabul, Afghanistan is under inspection by the Spanish government after the fatal shooting. An argument was being interpreted between two Spanish police and the trainee that soon got out of hand. The soldier killed the officers and interpreter before he was fatally shot by his commanding officer. Both the Spanish and the Afghans had no comment except that they understand that the crime didn’t have anything to do with diplomatic problems. Sadly the interpreter and one of the Spanish police had a wife and children that are devastated after the triple murder in Kabul.
