Every August, many people in Argentina pay tribute to their earth goddess, Pachamama.

People make very good food such as tamales, stews, llamas, and lambs and so much more.

Grief Across Latin America for Migrant Killings

AGUA CALIENTE, GUATEMALA- Gilmar Morales was warned the journey north would be hard. So Gilmar Morales beefed up on eggs and sausage, bought some ham sandwhiches from the bodega across the street, told his mother he loved her and set off with two other relatives on a path well-traveled by young people here in one of Latin America's poorest countries. Despite hardships and perils that stand before them- a raging drug war in Mexico, walls, border agents, National guard troops, anti-immigrant fervor and a fragile economy if they even make it- they still come. Morales was found with 71 others him being the 72 killed near the texas border. Was Gilmar, the one with the familiar yellow-and-white striped T-shirt, and his blue pants? MISS AUSTRALIA STABBING.

Jesinta Campbell, better known as Miss Australia had a costume malfunction while walking on stage. Apparently, another jealous contestant laced her costume with pins which all stuck into her when she was walking on stage. She had been prepared for competition from the other contestants, but she never knew it would go this far.

"I put it on just before I was due to go out on parade, but I felt these sharp pains when something stuck into my back," she told Sydney's Daily Telegraph. "I took the top off and saw all these pins had been stuck in it."

There were 82 other contestants so there is no way to narrow it down, but she does say that the girls from the South American countries and Philipines were 'extremely competitive'.

She has no plans to further her career in modeling or even to compete in another beauty pagent.

The government is trying their best to stop this problem. They recently created a security force called the Bolivarian National Police.

The U.N. approximates that about 500 women were raped in Eastern Cong during July and August. About a month ago U.N. officials brought to light that a large number of women had been gang raped, that number has dramatically increased to 242 women in 13 villages in the North Kivu Province. Of those 242, 28 were minors. Atul Khare senior official and deputy of peacekeeping was sent to investigate and told the security council on Tuesday that at the very least 257 had been raped in North Kivu and South Kivu Provinces, for a staggering total of 499 victims. 5 Guards Killed in Tajikistan Prison Break

On August 23, 2010 two dozen prisoners at a Tajikistan prison escaped killing five guards in the process. The twenty five prisoners to escape were militants of Russia’s North Cacuasus region and members of the Islamic movement of Uzbekistan, which has links to the Taliban groups of Afganistan. Many of these people were imprisoned for attempting to overthrow the government. The prisoners escaped by overpowering the guards late Sunday night. They were said to have taken advantage of one of the guards “negligence” and seized one part of the detention facility. During the escape the prisoners initially killed a 31 year old man, and severely beat another man. Then they changed into camofluaged uniforms and fled the prison with stolen weapons. A few hours later the escapees attacked another detention facility killing four more guards. A special team of law enforcement officials have been sent out to find the prisoners.

I think the prison that the prisoners escaped from should have better security. Twenty five prisoners should not have been able to flee the prison.

Two Megacities Rise in the Sand

A highway that heads west out of Cairo was oftenly used by people who wanted to leave the cities chaos now ends at two cities are being built. The cause of this is because Cairo had long been so overcrowded, and polluted that the Egyptian government decided to built two new cities outside it from scratch. The Egyptian government already relocated most of the lower class folk who have been living in illegal slums in Cairo, though no one expects the government to demolish the makeshift neighborhoods that have been built because they make up to half of the city. Japanese officials Reveal Execution Chambers

Japans government opened up execution chambers to the public for the first time. Journalists were taken on a tour on Tokyo’s main gallows. Japans government opened the execution chambers on September, 3 2010. The inside of the execution chamber was: a Trapdoor, a Buddha and a ring for the noose. 2000-2009 Japan sentenced 112 people on death row and 46 executed. Inmates that is on death row are not told a date when they are going to be executed, they are told last minute. Inmates can remain on death row as long as 40 years. What I thought about this was what are the inmates reactions to when they are told last minute?? And I think this is cool but messed up because of how the government told the inmates last minute about their death.

Art Theft Underworld Frustrates France

There has been a series of art thefts in Europe over the past year. Over 20 highly priced paintings by famous artists including Pablo Picasso have been stolen. The biggest of these crimes took place last may when two art pieces were stolen from a granddaughter of Pablo Picasso. The two works were worth a combined total of $227 million dollars. 5 pieces were also stolen from the Paris Museum of Modern Art by making a molded copy of a security key and entering through the only window in the whole museum that wasn’t covered by a camera. The country is baffled by these thieves and the thefts have aroused many questions, such as: Where are they selling these recocgnizable paintings? And When will it stop? These recent events have definately galvanized museums into improving their security systems and many French museums are rethinking their security strategies. I think that Pablo Picasso's granddaughter should hire some bodyguards, or maybe think about putting an alarm in her apartment...

H.I.V Gel

In July 2010, South Africa was introduced to a H.I.V prevention gel. Those who used the gel most regularly cut their odds of infection by 54 percent. The gel has only been made for woman and with more research; a gel for men can be created. Studies in South Africa have shown estimates of 5.7 million people are infected, which is more than any other nation. Only about $58 million of the $100 million that was donated for this cause was used for this research. Researchers would like to use the rest of the money to create an even stronger gel but for now they have to close the funding gap and get the gel to women. Donors have not committed enough money for even one of the two studies needed to confirm a promising South African trial of the gel. I think it’s amazing that we have the technology to create substances like this. Also, once this is introduced in America, I’m sure it will make a huge impact on many people.

It should take as long as four months to dig a tunnel up to get the trapped miners out and into safety. Although the trapped miners have not heard the news about the Chileans getting them out in four months , they still are keeping their "cool". I think its good that they are going to get the miners out in four months , but I also think its stupid to not tell the miners that they are going to get out in about four months.

On Thursday the court convicted a musician of causing bodily-harm to her ex-boyfriend by having unprotected sex with him even though she knew she was infected with H.I.V. which causes AIDS. Nadja Benaissa is 28 and a singer, she performed with the band No Angels. She avoided prison by receiving a two year suspended sentence for showing deep remorse through out the trial in Darmstadt. Her ex-boyfriend informed them that she infected him during a brief relationship in 2004. In 1988 a german court made it a crime for a person to have sex with a partner while aware of having these conditions. If you do, you could face up to ten years in prison and courts in Germany have handed out lengthy terms.

Cleaner Energy in Europe

About five years ago, about seventeen percent of Portugal's energy was from renewable resources. By the end of twenty-ten, they plan on using forty-five percent clean energy. With these plans, energy prices have gone up fifteen percent in five years due to the renewable energy program.

The oil spill in the Gulf has reminded politicians and citizens alike about the need for clean energy. Europe has been leading the way for cleaner resources, Portugal number eighteen on some lists, with the U.S. lagging behind. Obama has been planning on catching up, but politics always get in the way, it seems.

Cleaner energy in Europe will set the trend for renewable resources in the rest of the world. In fact, Korea is making an energy-efficient island, easily following suit. Europe and parts of Asia have entered the future, why don’t we, the U.S.?

Philippine Crisis

On August 23, 2010, a bus full of Hong Kong tourists was held in hostage by a 55 year old former policeman, Rolando Mendoza in Manila Philippines. In the bus there were 22 Hong Kong tourists, along with 3 Filipinos – a driver, a guide, and a photographer. During the hostage, Rolando freed 9 tourists from the bus and the driver was able to escape safely through a window. Resulting from the hostage, 8 Hong Kong tourists died and 7 were wounded. The hostage lasted for 12 hours but Rolando fired his gun only during the end of the crisis when he saw his brother being taken by the police on the news from a monitor inside the bus. The major mistakes that the Philippine police did was letting the crisis show on media when it was happening and the ground commander failed to take control of the situation and his team. In my opinion, the police department of the Philippines was not able to do their job and did not handle the hostage as safely as they could have. Because of the carelessness, I think that the death of some Hong Kong tourists were committed by the police.

European Motorcyclists Racing Towards God

There was a big sacred celebration in Porcaro in Brittany, France. There were priests praying for the pilgrims to race to God on motorcycles. This festival was called the Madonna of the Bikers, and this attracted many motorcyclists all around Europe. However, despite of their enjoyment, bikers got carried away often with worship and profanity! There were not just them who believe in God, there were also original motorcyclists who celebrated with alcoholic liquor while wearing permanent tattoos, piercings, and gothic logos on their clothing and motorbikes as a sign of Satanism.

I think they must not worship with motorcycles and let this sacred festival be as normal as it is because I don't want this Satan-worshipping ceremony to happen again.

Massacre in Mexico sets off new fears

They say that the massacre happened because of the criss crossing routes of drug trafficking and human smuggling into the U.S. Due to all the deaths and kidnappings the U.S ordered that children of united state diplomats living in Monterrey, Mexico must leave the country immediately. Also because a week ago a shootout occured in front of a private school common to American and Mexican executive students.

Beijing protests against Japan!

A Chinese fisherman collided with two Japanese coast guard boats and was arrested. However, after he was placed in custody, Beijing protested against Japan for doing such acts. Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue assisted in this protest and called Japans ambassador to him, for the second time in two days.
Eventually, the news died down some, but the protesting still hasn't dissipated. Without a strong defence, Japan seemed to be in a lot of trouble. Most Japanese fanatics are rooting for the country, and I support them. :D

Is the war in Iraq really over?!

Obama announced that the worst in Iraq is over meaning is end of combat. In monday's New York Times says otherwise. The last U.S. Troops were pulleed out a few weeks ago but 50,000 U.S. noncombat troops are still in iraq. Violence is still all over the country of Iraq so that leaves us to question is the war over or not? So is the government continuing to lie to us? There still are 4,500 Special Force troops in Iraq still. So whats really going on here. The times said on thursday that offical said "espite the end of offical comabt that fighting will still be going on."They also say end of combat doesn't mean end of operations. So thats were the 4,500 Special Force. So it's end of combat but not end of operations, confusing isn't but isnt doing special ops. still fighting, combat, etc. The governmoent should stop lying!

Cockroaches are GROSS!

Cockroaches are known for invading your house, and scaring the little kids. Studies have found that they are now also useful for curing or even getting rid of very dangerous drug-resistant bactertial infections! British researchers at the University of Nottingham's School of Veterinary Medicine and Science are trying to learn more about it. Tissues of a cockroaches have molecules that fight bacteria like E. coli and MRSA! To be specifc, the tissues are mostly found in the critter's brain. They are said to kill more than 90 percent of dangerous bacterial infections. After this a team in U.K. are trying to find out if any other bugs fights off any kind of bacteria. Health experts now say that bacterial infections soon enough, will be entirely resistant to current treatments. Experts now realise that they need to hurry up and develop new classes of drugs that lets us know that we have enough viable treatment options!

Death toll in Bejing

On Aug 24, 2010, A Chinese passenger jet crashed, killing 42 people, in the nation’s first fatal crash in 5 years. It crashed an hour after departing from Harbin, China. The other 54 survivors were severely injured. 2 people on the ground were also killed. Among the passengers were 5 children, they all survived the crash, but 4 of them suffered heavy respiratory tract burns. The plane crashed around 9:30 p.m. local time. The plane broke in half throwing some passengers out of the cabins before bursting in flames. They said passengers were unable to open emergency exits after the wreck; survivors escaped through cracks in the fuselage. Xinhua news reported that Chinese carriers had previously complained of problems with the aircraft, including cracks in the turbine plates and flight control system errors. In my opinion, the airline was being pretty dumb not getting the plane checked even though there were alot of complaints.

Japan reporter tricked captors into using Twitter

Kosuke Tsuneoka was a captive in Afghanistan for five months. Militants relied on Tsuneoka to teach them how to use their cell phones. Days before he was freed, a militant asked Tsuneoka to set it up. The militants wanted to access Al-Jezeera but he shifted their attention to Twitter. He then showed them how it worked, and tricked them tweeting " am still allive, but in jail" and "here is archi in kunduz. in the jail of commander lativ." and never realizing that militants were tricked.

Kosuke Tsuenoka was sure that he wouldn't make it out of the jail alive, but after months of captivity he was sure he would be able to gain so freedom. His captors feeded him well and never used violence against him. He is one of the dozen journalists captured in Afghanistan.

Can sleep be the cause of Obesity?

According to NPR: Morning Edition and Psychiatrist Emmanuel Mignot who directs the Center of Sleep Sciences in Stanford University of Medicine says that children between the ages of 2 to 5 have doubled in obesity and tripled between the age group of 6 to 11 year olds. After their experiments they found out that children and adults who didn’t get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep a day become more fatter. Emmanuel states one theory, he says the children who sleep late have less energy which causes them to not be as energetic as the others who did sleep for 8 hours or more. It also causes a hormonal change which makes you crave food in high sugar, salt, and fat.

PLANE CRASH KILLED PEOPLES!!! COMMENT

According to the New York Times 42 people were killed in a terrible plane crash in bejing. 54 were also injured on this terrible Tuesday night. Immediately after crashing the jet burst into flames killing many instantly though some died slow and painfully. Enginears are still looking for another cause. Survivors suggest that the plain stayed together until hitting a grassy plane where it burst into flames. The airport swears it was a complete accident and will not happen again.

Shakenhurst Manor

According to the New York Times, in Cleobury Mortimer, England, something happened that has not happened in over a thousand years. For over a thousand years the Shakenhurst Manor has been in the same family. It is now for the first time in a millennium, going back on the market. The entire property, the main house, the 12 cottages, 1,300 acres, or 525 hectares, of woods and farmland, a lake and river with fishing rights and the shooting rights are for sale at £12 million, or about $19 million. The real estate agent believes that people will pay premium price for the whole property, and thinks it to be a shame to break it up. I think that it’s very interesting that a house that has been in royal family for a thousand years is going on the market. I really hope that the real estate agent doesn’t break up the property, and the new owner preserves its rich history.

However in the Venezuela, whose population is about equal to Iraq’s, 16,000 casualties were reported due to the same causes. Venezuelans have been leaving their homes and even families behind to avoid becoming a victim. In the local newspaper of Venezuela there was a picture posted of a dozen bodies lying on the ground. The court ordered the local news to stop printing and distributing the paper. Apparently, these killings have been occurring because of the gap between the rich and the poor. According to Scholars of Venezuela, the amount of homicides was 3 times as much last year than when Mr. Chavez, their current governor, was elected. Since police officer’s salaries remain low in Venezuela, the officers themselves commit crimes like robbery and kidnapping. According to the court more killings have been occouring because "the country is flooded with thousands of firearms." I believe these casualties have been occuring because the poor people are trying to gain the rich people benefits, while the rich people instead of fending off the poor, continue to take action.

Current Event

Last Wednesday an Afghan soldier in training shot and killed two Spanish police officers and an interpreter. The Spanish run training camp in Kabul, Afghanistan is under inspection by the Spanish government after the fatal shooting. An argument was being interpreted between two Spanish police and the trainee that soon got out of hand. The soldier killed the officers and interpreter before he was fatally shot by his commanding officer. Both the Spanish and the Afghans had no comment except that they understand that the crime didn’t have anything to do with diplomatic problems. Sadly the interpreter and one of the Spanish police had a wife and children that are devastated after the triple murder in Kabul.

Australia makes world history

Australia is known for its individuality and parliamentary government system. This country has managed to avoid recession for the past 20 years. In July 2010, unemployment was an estimated 5.3 percent, of which is about half the percentage and rate of the United States. Currently, the country’s Labor party is fighting for survival in the most recent election on August 21, 2010. Australia is being dominated by the concerns of the immigration policy. A hung Parliament may be necessary. This hung Parliament will be the first time in 70 years. The highly renounced Kevin Rudd was ousted by the Prime Minister Mr. Gillard in 2010. Now, Prime Minister Julia Gillard is in power of the Labor party and is also the head of state. This remarkable decline holds some of the highest approvals in world history. Cayla McCurdy
