Imperialism in Iraq

There is still modern day imperialism in today's society. America has been invading the middle east since 2001, supposedly because of weapons of mass destruction. Since then we have been colonizing our troops down there and trying to take over and rebuild their government. They have
retaliated with explosives and warfare, but we continue to sculpt their cultural world into ours.
We are doing what the early europeans did and we might be making a mistake. One of our biggest reasons for settling out in Afghanistan is the rich oil production, fossil fuel is a huge resource for America until we find new sources of energy. We will continue to fight this war and try to dominate their land. Whether they want us to or not.

african imperialism

In Africa today there is far less trouble then in the past with Europeans but there are still
conflicts with gold and diamonds. They turned the Africans against each other and now the fight is not only with the europeans but mostly against other african countries and colonies. The genocides have slowed down but the fights still rage on all because of the imperialism from the past with all the European domination. There is still slavery and racism which is mostly with the africans themselves, because the light skinned are better than the dark skinned or the ones with big lips are better than those with smaller lips. These small differences were not even noticed until they were seperated from each other and forced each other into slavery.

Imperialism

America is trying to change Iraq to make them like us. They believe they are making them better just like what Britain tried to do to India. Britain believed that they were helping them by building railroads and doing trade. America believes they are helping by changing their government. They have 125,000 troops stationed there and what are they doing there? America is trying to force Iraq to be like them and with the troops there, Iraq fights back. America doesn't believe that they are imperialists but what they are doing seems like it

I believe America's actions shows that they are imperialists. I don't think that forcing a country to do what they don't want to do fits well for a country that preaches freedom. America feels that the only way to do it is by using weaponry. I believe that if you want to try to change a country, let them change for how they want to change. America is basically colonizing with their troops there in Iraq. 125,000 shows that they are willing to attack to make them change. It is just like what Europe did to Africa. America believes that Iraq can't rule their own country without "help" from them. America tries to not look bad to their own country but around the world, there is a lot of hate for them.

Africans lose land to a new leader

African farmers displaced as inventors move in. Some Africans that lived in this small farm (more like a village) were removed by half a dozen strangers that came along and took over the farm. Libya's leader, Muammar El-Qaddafi, had took control and power this village and claimed it his. All the farmers had to leave. One of the farmers said "They told us this would be the last rainy season for us to cultivate our fields; after that, they will level all the houses and take the land". Africans were stunned about what had just happened, they clearly understood that the government typically had owned their land and had been leasing it to private investors and foreign governments for decades to come. All the government did was take the crops that had been growing for a while and he sold them. So basically the farmers all what they were getting was money from the government, and the government was getting all the money and using for "taxes".

I think the way it relates as imperialism is that the way that the government took over the villagers land. And some leader came to the land and claimed it his. Like for example, from the perspectives of the colonizers, Europeans thought that Africans were unable to handle running their own countries so they had taken over. The only thing that was different the perspective of the colonized because the farmers here were shocked of this happening and back then some farmers liked foreign control. But some really disliked foreign control and rebelled against foreigners. The way that this hasn't changed was that the government has always been selling and leasing the land to other foreign countries. There has always been a trade between countries, so that's why leaders show up and take over the lands the people working there have no other choice then to leave.

Early Imperialism Effects China

Coal has been the main resource and energy source for China since the start of their nation. And China will do whatever it takes to keep getting the coal that they apparently need so much. China's leaders have a long history of invading other places for their use of coal. Recently the president of China decided to invade northeast China and use their plentiful supply of coal. This is not the first time something like this has happened. In 1949 the communist red army of China led by emperor Mao took control of Bejiing and placed embargos on trade routes, relying on their output of coal to boost their economy. Since then, coal has been China's leading resource and it has continued to do so up until today.
China is definately not the first country to invade or take other a nother place for gain of resources. That has been goihg on for centuries dating back to the 19th where Europe divoded Africa up amongst themselves. Or when britain invaded the muslim lands of the middle east (ottoman empire, india, china). Theses were the bases of modern imperialism. Peoples love of geopolitics force them want the best. The best resoursces, the best location, the best people. This obviously led to China's love of coal plentiful locations and imperialism of other countries.

Imperial Synthesis Assignment Option 1

Today in West Africa the U.S. Army is taking their minerals from the Ivory Coast. But their excuse is that they are “protecting” Africa from the riots taking place because Gbagbo will not step down from his president ship even though he lost the election to Ouatarra. During this time the U.S. Army. Is taking the natural resources that are native to the Ivory Coast. They are staying there and are competeing for the minerals needed to make electronics function. There are others who are there trying to also take the minerals. But for right now the U.S. army is staying there, but as an excuse they are saying they are there for “peace- keeping”.

This current event relates to imperialism when England was taking over. This is just like how England and other countries were in history. They took people from Africa and their resources. Britain took resources from India and ruled over it for a very long time through colonies. They exported guns and gave them to the natives and the Africans did try to revolt but spears could not defeat guns and there for the other nations were able to take over Africa and use their land with out permission from the Africans themselves. Others used racism to keep them down. They said that their head shape resembled the shape of an ape and used that as an excuse for what they were doing to them.

Imperialism

In Africa The Colonizers believed Africans were unable to handle running their own country. While the colonized were foreign control. Ethiopia won against foreign powers and gained their freedom and independence. Ethiopia showed the colonizers and the colonized by defeating them. The colonizers were racist people. They believed Ethiopia was weak and they couldn't control their own country. At the end though Ethiopia came on top.

This relates to the war in Iraq because Its a sphere of influence and the war in Ethiopia was also a sphere of influence. The sphere of influence is basically an area in which an outside power claimed exclusive investment. This relates to imperialism because we are spending so much money on war while we can be spending money to fix education and too buy new books for schools. All that money on war could have gone to fix our cites and on other things as well. Even though we are spending so much money on war. Our troops are doing a good thing for Iraq. They are trying to get independence for Iraq because many people don't have freedom and maybe one day they will get freedom.

Imperialism in India

In late 1990, when Indian's seed economy was forced by the World Band to become globalized, economic conditions within the nation's agriculture become worst. Indian farmers situation were into abject poverty. Twenty-five years later, the effect of this associate takeover of Indian agriculture is countless suicides, 200,000 people which have occurred just in past ten years. Many farmers have lost their farms and lands. Millions of Indian farmers with absolutely nothing lead to committed suicide. Years of the poor agricultural policy was blame for the widespread failure of agriculture in many Indian regions and connected to the introduction of GM (genetically-modified), in the 1990. The reporter said that Indian government removed cotton subsides in 1997, which mean cotton farmers has loss their profits. When farmers borrow large amount of money to invest in GM technology, they become in debt because they do not have money to pay back. Eventually, they lost everything and many of them end up killing themselves because they have nothing left. The globalization of agriculture in general has increased poverty in India, as crop subsides in other nations began to affect India agriculture. Indian farmers lost many money to compete in the global market. Global power has ruin farmers' life unless they try to stop the global system in India.

Imperialism

China had began to create a loose alliance with the countries Brazil, Russia, India and China. China had just invited South Africa to join this alliance that had many people puzzled. These countries put together work to attain a higher growth, employment, etc. Some people believe that this is a positive way to have a better economy in the world, but others do not. According to Goldman Sachs, India and China will have the best economy in all of the world around as early of 2030. Since these countries make up half of the world's population, this means that there will be a large amount of resources needed. China did not invite smaller countries such as South Korea or Mexico to join this alliance (even though they have a quick growing economy) because they will have a little effect on decisions made with the BRIC alliance. This may seem like a friendly opportunity that China has started, but it has been made clear that it is imperialism.
This relates to imperialism because it shows the need for more resources. Since Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are large countries that are heavily populated, they will need an excess amount of resources. Every single day, 200,000 acres of rain forest is cut down and there is only 20% of the world's rain forests left. Sooner or later the rain forests will be all demolished and no longer provide for companies. This may look like these countries' economies will better, but people believe this will only benefit China leaving these countries with nothing.

Imperialism

A controversial aspect of imperialism is the imperial power’s defense and justification of such actions. Most controversial of all is the justification of imperialism done on scientific grounds. J. A. Hobson identifies this justification: “It is desirable that the earth should be peopled, governed, and developed, as far as possible, by the races which can do this work best, i.e. by the races of highest 'social efficiency'." This is clearly the racial argument, which pays heed to other ideas such as the “white mans burden” prevalent at the turn of the twentieth century.
The principles of imperialism are often deeply connected to the policies and practices of British Imperialism "during the last generation, and proceeds rather by diagnosis than by historical description." British Imperialist strategy centred on the fundamental concept of terra nullius (Latin expression which stems from roman law meaning ‘empty land’). The country of australia serves as a case study in relation to British imperialism. British settlement and colonial rule of the island of Australia in the eighteenth century was premised on terra nullius, for it was seen as a land that was ‘empty’ of inhabitants. Despite British claims, an estimated 350,000 indigenous peoples were already living in Australia in the era of British conquest. The indigenous population suffered through years of political, social, and territorial oppression, however Aborigines were granted the right to vote comparatively early in Commonwealth elections, depending on whether their state allowed it. An example is in 1856, in NSW, where Aborigines were granted equal voting rights. It should be noted that the 1968 referendum only allowed the Commonwealth to count and administer Aborigines.

Imperialism

Imperialism was the process and maintenance of an unequal economic, cultural and territorial relationship, between the states and often in the form of an empire, based on domination and subordination. Imperialism is described in the world as a primarily western undertake that people involving the economic system. Geographical enviroments include the Mongolian Empire, Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, Holy Roman Empire, British Empire, but the term can equally be applied to environment of knowledge. Belief values and knowledge such as the empires of Christianity or Islam. Imperialism is usually offensive, and also sometimes imposing in character.

Imperialism in Asia has a series of voyages that looked for a sea passage to India in the hope of establishing direct trade between Europe and Asia. Not long before 1,500 European economies were large on self-sufficient only to find supplies by a minor trade with Asia and Africa. However Europeon and Asian economies were slowly becoming integrated through the rise of new global trade routes and the early force of European political power, commerce, and culture in Asia rose to a growing trade in producing a key development in the rise of the modern world and free market economy. Also the Portuguese took sufficient control and the Italians traded between Asia and Europe by the discovery of the sea route to India around the Cape of Good Hope. However, with the rise of the rival Dutch East India Company the Portuguese also influenced Asia into gradually being greater.

Imperialism isn't a "Tie Breaker"

In 2002 the US made a goal to somehow take control and own the West African Ivory Coast. Now in 2010 the US and the European Union are stepping up their game to see who will govern the coast. Many people blame Laurent Gbagbo, a running president who was defeated by Alassane Ouattara for the undecided decision. Gbagbo couldn't seem to accept his defeat and finally rose above and became president. Once he became president he implemented harsh pro-market polices. He started to make rude comments about the US and how they didn't deserve to govern the coast, which I personally disagree with. Gbagbo's government is in no economic state or condition to govern it and the US (with the help of the European Union) can. How much more simple can it get? The US responded to these rude comments with some questioning which cannot be shared with the public and Gbagbo could say was that it was a source of Imperialism and he would not let it happen. He claims that the country’s problems flow from France, the former imperial power, which seems make a lot of sense to many Ivorians.
The only thing Gbagbo seems to fail at noticing is that the French maintained their empire through divide and rule in the past and that this whole situation really has nothing to do with them. “Imperialism is a policy of extending control or authority over foreign entities as a means of acquisition and/or maintenance of empires, either through direct territorial conquest or through indirect methods of exerting control on the politics and/or economy of other countries.” Is this what the US is trying to do? Indirectly yes, but we're not trying to conquer the Ivory Coast, we simple just want to take care of it, as well as letting the people living in the area continue living their lives. What they think is that we are going to produce sources of raw materials and cheap labor, shaping their economies to suit its own interests and keeping their people in poverty. When really, the U.S just wants it so we could just own more land a few more natural resources.

Imperialism Synthesis Assignment

In Tunisin the government has lifted the ban on political groups. there was a new government and it was against certain political groups and did not want them in there city. so the new government had banned all political groups and said they could not have any. Ben Ali made all the Cabinet members who once belonged to the party have to quit. This showed a form of racism because the governer did not like the specific political group. But, Ali was threatened with resignations if he did not allow the political groups back in. This would have also lead to a new election if they were not brought back in. Ali did not like the idea but he did not want there to be a new election. This is why the ban on the political groups was lifted and there could be political groups again.
This article relates to imperialism because it shows racism in Africa. Racism was one of the ecffects in imperialism and it is still going on today. If you relate the ban on political groups to race and ethnicity, you can see there is racism. Some people don't like you and your culture or race just because of the color of your skin. For example, I think the common racism between two races is the whites and the blacks. In some countries and states, white people dont like black people or visa-versa. Well this governor did not like a specific political group. This is how racism is still in effect, not just by political groups but as well as race. This is in a lot of countries and states as well.

Imperialism

Chinas presence has been felt in Africa. China is in Africa as part of an effort to create a pardigm of globalisation that favors China. China has said that they will respect Africas national sovereignty and won't interefere with internal affairs. Recently Chinas promise has shifted a little towards an imperialism. They seem to be on a pursuit of economic self interest to acess raw materials and want trade and military influences brought on in Africa. These goals that China has could fall into an imperialism category.
Imperialism is the domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. Imperialism has been a part of our history for centuries. It has also cuased lots of problems for countries like Africa that have raw materials that people want to make money off of. Imperialism can also cuase wars becuase countries want to prove that they are better than everyone else and they also want money. China is trying to get there hands on africas raw materials to make an economic profit off them. Thats why the situation explained above between China and Africa is considered imperialism. I beleive that instead of one country benefitting from imperialism both countries should. There should be an agreement between both countries that divide all the positive outcomes to be split fifty-fifty. When only one country benefits the other one begins to face hardships like disease, famine, and death becuase outside countries come into lands like Africa use up the resources and leave harming the enviroment in Africa. Imperialism is wrong and harmful and the world should learn how to comprimise equally.

Is what we know really all there is to it...?

Ever since European countries took selected territories over in Africa, imperialism has been a large part played in politics, wars, racism, and power control. On February 17, 2010, Robert Gates stressed the Iraq mission, "Oppression Iraqi Freedom,"... not a very welcomed thought by the people in Iraq, however. He wanted to rid the freedom of those who lived in Iraq while our armies were still there, something not a single person on this planet has the right to do. Not even back then, when Europe took Africa; they thought that the people living in Africa were more closely related to animals than to humans and didn't deserve freedom or even the land they walked on. Taking away freedom from those who have it is not a concept of deserving and not, but rather oppression and being oppressed.

Like the link below states, "Withdrawal From Iraq Is Not the End of Imperialist Slaughter." Robert Gates was the one who came up with all of this and stressed it during the war. This was their "new mission" under the military's name during the 2003 invasion. Seven years later, Obama announced "the end of our combat mission in Iraq..." The meaning behind his statements for me is still not superficial. Imperialism seems to still take hold of those in power or around power. Wanting to control something they believe is less than them or not worthy of what that something possesses. In the end, considering the fact that I could care less about politics, I still have no idea whether or not Obama meant that they had completely oppressed Iraq or if he was talking about a different mission. Either way, I just hope the imperialists in this world end up disappearing within the next few decades (even if its an unrealistic thought).

Imperialism in Africa

Just as imperialism slit up Africa in the late seventeen hundreds, it continues to hurt its economy and people. Then, Britain, France, and other European countries were fighting over nearly the entire continent. Today, the European Union and the U.S. are fighting over the western areas of Africa.
While Europe was colonising Africa, many wars were started. Britain and France dominated, along with other European countries, because of economic influence and their armies. None of the African natives stood a ghost of a chance with their comparatively inferior weapons, and so Europe took over. At the Berlin Conference, many European nations with enough power gained a foothold for their military and spheres of influence. When Britain and others left, Africa suffered from post-colonisation. This essentially left poverty in their wake, which would naturally effect future generations, both economically and socio-politically.
Starting in 2002, Côte d'Ivoire's Muslim North and Christian South began a war amongst themselves, due to political differences. Their president, Laurent Gbagbo, claims the current issues are due to France imperialising and leaving the country in the past. Many Ivorians agree that this could be the place to blame, and some of the more liberal citizens support Laurent for his anti-imperialist opinions. Alassane Ouattara, Ivory Coast's disputed governor, is supported by the lefts of France for his democratic views. Gbagbo seems unwilling to give up his title to Ouattara due to poll rigging on both Ouattara's and his own side, and possibly other reasons. Ethnic bigotry has been advocated for either side, including the southern Catholics considering themselves more "authentic" Ivorians. The people hurt by the civil war are fighting back.
Transport strikes and violence in the streets are taking place in the county, as troops defend what they can. It seems like self-segregation, in a way, with how the Catholics and Muslims are politically separating themselves. Their democracy seems broken at this point in time.
