WWII Battle of Britain Reid Riegelsberger Period 3

Reid Riegelsberger

Period 3

Battle of Britain

Birmingham didn’t get it as bad as London. I received a frantic phone call from my mother just minutes after 5 in the morning on Monday. My heart raced as she described to me the events that unfolded: bombs falling from the sky, nothing but screams, explosions and fire. I told her to get underground, perhaps the subway station, whatever she thought best. I then immediately got into my car and drove to her; the Germans could’ve been back any minute.

I made it to London in record time, and went straight to the subway station to look for my Mother and darling sister, Abigail. She was only six Running through town was horrendous; there was fire everywhere, women and children screaming and crying, more explosions. I turned onto Baker Street and I saw them. Only I wish I hadn’t. They saw me and ran to me, as the flaming bakery came crashing down on top of them. I ran to them, and tried to free their bodies. But there was no hope; they were gone. I cried as I said my final goodbye then ran away, not knowing or caring where I ended up, or if I would even make it.

I ended up on a destroyed street that I couldn’t make out, and there was a dead policeman lying on the ground. I took his pistol mechanically. I slowly raised it to my head, and pulled the trigger. I remember my last living thought, “I’ll be with you soon Abigail.” And I pulled the trigger.

I feel your pain. Not knowing where to go. It was an awful sight, but our perspectives were not the same. Being 13, running away from home, i was lost. You had a family to love and be there for til they were killed i had nothing but the military. The day Germany put there operation to action, they attacked our Royal Airforce and failed but we would not give up. Some of our airforce bases were located far out in the sea away from Hitler's destruction route. Our military out smarted Hitler, and led to his defeat. I thank God everyday i have lived ever since i took part in the Battle of Britain. Being a citizen of Briatin must have been traumitizing to yourself as well as our people, espacially for not preparing for lives being taken away such as your life and your families. Your story has a history along with the millions of people who have experienced such a tramatic event. Fighting for freedom takes pride, hope, and many lives of soliders and people who never gave up.
